Maths
The mathematics curriculum at Tarvin Primary School, is built through precise planning by our teachers so that every child in our school has the opportunity to succeed. To achieve this, we follow Intent Documents and use Planning overviews from First4maths to support progression and awareness of National pitch for Mastery and Greater Depth. We integrate a wide range of resources as appropriate including First4Maths, White Rose, NCETM, Nrich as well as other resources that we identify when appropriate to the lesson. This mastery approach, encourages the children to build their mathematical fluency and become skilled in the explanation of mathematical skills as well as allowing them to deepen their understanding through exploration of topics in greater detail.
Within lessons, the children will be exposed to a range of strategies to support them in developing their understadning of new skills. This will be taught through the use of resources to help the children to understand the concepts and are refered to as Concrete, Pictoral and Abstract.
- Concrete – children have the opportunity to use concrete objects and manipulatives to help them understand and explain what they are doing.
- Pictorial – children then build on this concrete approach by using pictorial representations, which can then be used to reason and solve problems.
- Abstract – With the foundations firmly laid, children can move to an abstract approach using numbers and key concepts with confidence.
To support the children in the development of their written skills, we have a Calculation Policy which outlines the different stages that children go through to become efficient in their use of mathematical operations.
So that the children can build upon their skills at home, the school has subscribed to Times Tables Rock Stars and Numbots.
